World Poker Tour (WPT) was the first major international poker tournament that became known worldwide. It was also the first tournament which was broadcasted successfully on TV across the globe.
The online poker room WPT or WPT Poker was in itself not worth much. The real value was the WPT brand and its many tournaments held around the world.
With the acquisition of the World Poker Tour, Party Poker would be able to promote its own brands at all the tournaments without having to pay a third party for it.
The World Poker Tour started in late 2002 with the first WPT Championship in April 2003 at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada. The first season was shown on the Travel Channel in the United States in the spring of 2003. The TV show had a huge impact on the popularity of tournament poker worldwide and online poker saw a change from fixed limit to no-limit hold'em.
Party Gaming's strategy was also that by acquiring WPT they could re-enter the US market at a later stage with a well-known brand and a popular tournament series on US soil.
We have given it a success rate of 5 stars since the price seemed fairly low and it was a perfect fit for Party Pokers expansion plans on the world market. PokerStars had successfully owned and promoted the EPT for years. Now Party Poker had its own tournament series as well.
